Coral, pearls and amber are three stones that owe their origin to living organisms. Amber is the fossilized sap of fossil trees - a golden testimony of eternity and mankind's favorite stone. Location: Location: Once the most beautiful of the goddesses Jurate, who lived at the bottom of the cold Baltic Sea, fell in love with the mortal fisherman Kostitis. Kostitis, succumbing to the charms of the goddess, followed her to the amber palace, which was Jurate's home. Maybe to this day the fisherman and the goddess would have lived in happiness if their love had not angered the god of thunder Pärkunas. The severe thunderer destroyed the amber palace with his lightning bolts, killed Kostitis, and imprisoned the unfortunate Jurate forever at the bottom of the sea, chaining her to the ruins of her once beautiful palace. Since then, the beautiful goddess weeps for her lost love, and the sea throws small pieces of transparent amber onto the shore - tears of Jurate. This is one of the most beautiful legends about amber.
Another legend, told by Ovid in his "Metamorphoses", says that the pieces of golden stone are the tears of the mother and sisters of Phaethon, who set fire to the earth and was killed by Zeus. Klymene and her daughters grieved for Phaethon so much that they turned into trees, from the branches of which tears were falling, turning into amber and falling into the river. The river carried away the golden tears, and then generously gave them to people who came to its banks.
Amber is an amazing stone. Being an amorphous high-molecular compound of organic acids, it, strictly speaking, does not belong to stones at all. This substance, like coral, is the fruit of the vital activity of living organisms. Amber is the fossilized sap of the fossil trees of Pinus succinieferra.
What color is amber? Most believe that it looks like hardened honey. However, the stone has a huge number of shades: cream, golden, orange, greenish, brown, reddish and even white. At the same time, amber can be both cloudy and transparent. In some specimens of the mineral, there are inclusions from air bubbles or even insects, which in prehistoric times fell into the tree resin, and never got out of it. Such stones are most valuable to jewelers.
Amber is one of the oldest stones that people began to use for decoration. Clothes, utensils from prehistoric times were richly trimmed with golden sun stones. And already in Ancient Rome, luxury items were carved from amber. Pliny mentions that a skillfully carved amber figurine was valued higher than a young and strong slave.
Used amber for medicinal purposes. Old books contain about fifty recipes for potions, which include amber. With all the variety of official medicine, some of them are still used today. So in Poland, amber tincture is considered an indispensable remedy for respiratory diseases, colds.
The use of amber in magical practices is no less interesting. This stone is an ideal protective amulet against demons, evil eye, corruption. In addition, amber is believed to help cleanse invisible human bodies.
Since ancient times, mankind loves amber. And until now, this stone reciprocates, decorating and keeping all evil from people.
