Yves Saint Laurent: the path of the legend
Yves Saint Laurent: the path of the legend

Combining menswear and streetwear in his creations, pioneering unisex style and introducing items such as leather jackets, thigh high boots and even men's tuxedos into women's fashion, Yves Saint Laurent aimed to make the modern woman free and independent. It was he who adapted the style of the haute couture houses of the 1950s to the rhythm of modern life, making fashionable clothes more comfortable, but at the same time emphasizing the femininity of its owner. “Clothes should be subordinated to the personality of a woman, and not vice versa”

Yves Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in the Algerian city of Oran into a family of French aristocrats. After leaving school, the future couturier moved to Paris and began to study at the School of Fine Arts and the Syndicate of Haute Couture. He won his first prize at the age of 19, winning a competition for young designers. Soon Saint Laurent received an invitation to work with Christian Dior himself. After the death of Dior in 1957, at the age of 21, Saint Laurent stood at the head of a great empire. In 1960, the designer was drafted into the army, and in January 1962, with the help of his longtime friend Pierre Berger, he opened his own fashion house "Yves Saint Laurent", whose popularity soon surpassed Dior's.

Yves Saint Laurent has always sought to expand the usual framework of fashion, constantly coming up with new styles of clothing. It is Saint Laurent who owes their appearance to such fashionable elements as pantsuits, safari jackets, transparent dresses and a women's tuxedo. The designer found his inspiration in the centuries-old traditions of distant countries and past eras. Experiments with styles and colors were successful thanks to his innate talent and impeccable sense of taste.

The affairs of the house "Yves Saint Laurent" did not always go smoothly: often financial turmoil followed the unconditional triumphant creative upsurges. In 1999, American designer and stylist Tom Ford was appointed the new owner at the head of the YSL fashion house. In 2002, tired of the increasing commercialization of the fashion industry and the constant need to release new fashion collections one after another, Saint Laurent ended his career as a designer with a grandiose retrospective of the work he had created throughout his career.

In 2008, 71-year-old Couturier passed away in Paris after a long illness, shortly before his death entered into a civil marriage with his longtime partner and co-owner of the company Pierre Berger.
