Pure silver is a very soft metal. It is not suitable for making jewelry, coins, and cutlery. To do this, impurities are added to silver, and as a result, alloys are obtained that have greater resistance and durability. Location: Location:

Composition of 800 samples of silver

According to GOST 6836-80 “Silver and silver alloys. Grades , 800 silver test consists of 79.7-80.3% pure silver. Copper makes up 19.7 to 20.3 percent. As for impurities, the law provides for the addition of lead (no more than 0.005%), iron (no more than 0.13%), antimony (no more than 0.002%) and bismuth (no more than 0.002%). Copper is added to make the silver alloy more resistant to mechanical stress, since copper is stronger than silver. Lead, albeit in small quantities, makes silver cheaper and melts at a lower temperature. Iron is far from the most useful admixture of this alloy. It does not dissolve in silver, but settles in the form of individual particles, but the manufacturer can save on the production of the alloy. And bismuth deprives silver of plasticity, thanks to which the product is more difficult to bend or break.

Application of 800 samples of silver

The 800th sample of silver belongs to the lowest grades. In Russia, this sample is considered extremely low for the manufacture of jewelry. They are not of great value, because their color gives off yellowness, they quickly oxidize and darken. Cutlery, cigarette cases, decorative ornaments, sliding contacts, and electrical conductors are mainly made of 800 silver. Since this sample contains a fairly large amount of copper, products made from it are especially durable and are suitable for making household items for daily use. These can be cups and saucers, handles and writing utensils. But on the surface of the products, a greenish coating can appear - copper acetate. It is undesirable to use silver cutlery of this sample with acidic foods, especially vinegar, as poisonous copper salts are formed.

Despite its low fineness, 800 silver is widely distributed in countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, France, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Poland and Argentina. In Egypt, cheap 750-carat trinkets are given as 800 silver, but they can be recognized by their characteristic reddish tint. They are not worth the price they want for them and will soon lose their appearance.
